Grants
In July 2007, the board of the Eleos Foundation approved its first four grants.
Zambia Blindness Prevention Initiative
|
$114,500
|
  |
Blindness prevents over a quarter-million Zambians from participating in educational
and economic opportunity, usually leaving no choice but street begging. In the vast
majority of cases, the causes of blindness are easily treated or prevented. Eleos
is a lead investor in this three-year strategic initiative, which will help approximately
300,000 Zambians - mostly children - avoid blindness and have a chance at a normal,
fruitful life. |
Franchised Health Clinics in Kenya
|
$47,000
|

These ten clinics will bring basic health care services to a total
of 50,000-100,000 people per year.
|
Eleos will cover the initial start-up costs for ten trained Kenyan nurses to open
micro-franchise health clinics in rural Kenya.
Serving mostly children at an average
cost-per-visit of 51 cents, these self-sustaining clinics treat the most common
ailments that keep Kenyans from school or work: malaria, respiratory ailments, worms
and diarrhea. Link
